Lauren was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Haworth, New Jersey. She attended Columbia University and got her fiction MFA at Columbia's School of the Arts. After spending time as a tutor, a trend-forecaster, and a secretary, she published a collection of stories, The Best of Animals, and a novel, Reproduction is the Flaw of Love.

Lauren currently teaches creative writing at Rutgers University.
